‎ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2025 –

‎Nigeria has recorded another milestone in global digital leadership as the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council for 2025. The election, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland during the ongoing ITU Conference, is a strong affirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to digital transformation, innovation, and inclusive connectivity.

‎Founded in 1865, the ITU is the oldest specialised United Nations agency responsible for information and communications technologies (ICTs). It is charged with the global mandate of connecting the world through innovative, inclusive, and sustainable digital solutions, while facilitating seamless communication networks across nations.

‎In his acceptance speech, Dr. Tijani expressed delight at the confidence reposed in him, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to advancing resilient and sustainable digital infrastructures and ensuring timely access to meaningful connectivity, particularly for underserved communities. He noted that with this leadership position, Nigeria is strategically positioned to shape the future of digital development in Africa and beyond.

‎The Minister extended appreciation to the ITU Secretary-General, Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the management team, and member states for their trust. Highlighting the fast pace of technological change and structural shifts in societies, he emphasized the need for inclusive innovation, collaboration, and responsible digital governance.

‎Dr. Tijani also congratulated the newly elected ITU Chair, Ms. Cristiana Flutur of Romania, pledging close collaboration to achieve shared goals. He urged stakeholders to make the ITU “a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted collaboration for today and future generations.” The ITU Conference continues in Geneva with global leaders deliberating on the future of digital connectivity.
