CCTV, Drones, and Command Centres: Key to Renewed Hope Policing

By Gloria Sarauniya Usman

ABUJA, NIGERIA October, 2025 -

The recent arrest of armed robbery kingpin John Samuel in Lagos has once again highlighted the power of surveillance technology in modern policing. CCTV footage captured the suspect shooting at his victims before robbing them, underscoring how technology can bridge the gap between impunity and justice. Yet, in many parts of Nigeria, such tools remain scarce—leaving crimes unrecorded and unpunished.

The consequences of this gap are evident across the country. In September 2025, gunmen attacked villages in Patigi, Kwara State, killing and abducting residents without resistance for hours. Similar incidents expose Nigeria’s vulnerability and the urgent need for enhanced surveillance capacity. While a few states like Lagos, Edo, Oyo, and Akwa Ibom have operational Command and Control Centres, national coverage remains limited, and drone deployment is still inadequate.

Globally, CCTV systems and surveillance drones have proven effective in deterring and combating crime by providing real-time intelligence, identifying suspects, and enabling swift response. Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles (TAPVs), when equipped with attack drones, can protect security personnel and disrupt criminal activities even in remote areas. Experts say integrating these technologies into Nigeria’s policing framework could transform public safety.

Despite commendable government interventions—such as the Nigeria Police Trust Fund’s provision of patrol vehicles, ballistic vests, and station renovations—Nigeria’s fight against insecurity still lacks the technological edge required to outsmart evolving criminal networks. Expanding CCTV coverage, deploying drones, and equipping divisional police stations with modern tools have become urgent national priorities.

According to Bolaji Oladimeji Kazeem, Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Police Affairs, “Nigeria has the manpower and the will, but it lacks the surveillance infrastructure to stay ahead of criminals. Investing in CCTV, drones, and command centres is no longer optional—it is essential for Renewed Hope Policing.”
