ABUJA, NIGERIA December, 2024 -
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, handed over 50 brand-new operational vehicles to security agencies in the FCT. This initiative aims to strengthen the fight against insecurity in the nation's capital.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Minister emphasized that security is a core component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He assured residents of the FCT Administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The vehicles, procured through provisions in the FCT budget approved by the National Assembly, are part of a continuous effort to enhance security operations. Earlier this year, another batch of 50 vehicles was distributed, bringing the total to 100.
Minister Wike charged the security agencies to deploy the vehicles proactively in combating crime across Abuja and its satellite towns. “We must not give space for criminals to strike before we act. Take the fight to them and ensure a secure festive season,” he urged.
Acknowledging improved security, particularly the reduction in rural kidnappings, the Minister commended the security agencies for their efforts and pledged continued support. He revealed ongoing construction of 12 police divisions across the FCT’s six Area Councils, expected to be completed by April 2025.
He highlighted challenges such as poor road access in rural areas, which impede security operations, but expressed optimism that ongoing infrastructure development would address these issues. Wike also appealed to residents to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.
Addressing allegations of land-grabbing, the Minister firmly defended the FCT Administration’s actions to uphold lawful land management. “We will not bow to blackmail. Wrong is wrong, and no amount of media attacks will deter us from protecting government land,” he asserted.
He also warned landowners defaulting on ground rent and other taxes, emphasizing that the FCTA would revoke titles if necessary. “The FCT needs revenue to build infrastructure and pay salaries. We rely on taxes and ground rent because federal allocations alone are insufficient,” Wike explained.
In his remarks, the Director of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, thanked the Minister for his consistent support and provision of crime-fighting tools. Similarly, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, appreciated the donation, highlighting its role in enhancing emergency response and patrol capabilities.
Legislators, including Senator David Jimkuta and Hon. Aliyu Mukhtar Betara, commended the FCT Minister for his proactive approach to security and pledged the National Assembly's continued support. They also urged security agencies to ensure effective use of the vehicles.
