June 12: Labour Party felicitates Nigerians, urges commitment to national development

Abuja, June 12, 2026 - The Labour Party has felicitated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion of 2026 Democracy Day, urging citizens to celebrate democratic governance and remain committed to national development.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ken Asogwa, the party described the occasion as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment.

The party paid tribute to late Chief MKO Abiola and other patriots whose sacrifices, courage and struggles contributed significantly to Nigeria’s democratic journey and constitutional governance over the years.

According to him, Nigerians must ensure that the sacrifices of democratic heroes were not in vain by defending democratic values and promoting national unity and progress.

He acknowledged that Nigeria’s democratic experience had witnessed unfulfilled aspirations and missed opportunities, but stressed that citizens should not surrender to despair or hopelessness.

He urged Nigerians to remained hopeful and resolute, noting that the nation’s future still holds greater possibilities despite challenges encountered along the path of democratic development.

Asogwa described democracy as the best form of government, not only because it enables citizens elect leaders, but because it encourages participation in public affairs.

According to him, democracy remains the most inclusive governance system devised by mankind, placing citizens at the centre of decision-making processes and ensuring accountability in public administration.

He called on government authorities to intensify efforts toward addressing insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, hunger and deficits in critical infrastructure affecting millions of Nigerians nationwide.

Asogwa said that the dividends of democracy must be felt by ordinary citizens, whose welfare and wellbeing remained the ultimate justification for the existence of government.

“The Labour Party principles of equal opportunity and social justice align closely with democratic ideals and aspirations cherished by citizens across the country.”

According to him, any democracy that fails to guarantee a level playing field for citizens and political actors cannot be regarded as genuine democratic governance.

As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, Asogwa urged citizens not to lose faith in the possibility of building a better, more prosperous and inclusive nation.

He reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible leadership platforms and promoting individuals of proven character, competence and capacity capable of advancing national renewal and prosperity.
