ABUJA, NIGERIA December, 2024 - The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has presented the Ministry’s performance scorecard for the first three quarters of 2024, showcasing notable achievements aimed at strengthening internal security and police operations across Nigeria.

Speaking during a visit by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit, Hadiza Bala Usman, at the Ministry’s headquarters, Senator Gaidam highlighted key milestones. These include the establishment of the National Criminal Data Fusion Center (NCDFC), advancements in the West African Police Information System (WAPIS), and the automation of specialized police services to improve the operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The Minister outlined several ongoing initiatives under the Ministry’s Police Reform and Transformation Roadmap. These include enhancing infrastructure development, improving police welfare, and strengthening community policing to build public trust. Additionally, the Ministry has prioritized deploying digital technologies like tracking systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and modern surveillance equipment, including drones and helicopters, across six geopolitical zones.

He noted significant achievements, such as the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), enhanced deployment of tactical squads, and the flag-off of the construction of smart modern divisional police headquarters and six rank-and-file quarters. Infrastructure upgrades at the Police Academy and the recruitment of 30,000 police constables in 2024 also underscore the Ministry’s progress.

Furthermore, Senator Gaidam emphasized efforts to enhance police training, with 2,593 officers undergoing specialized training within and outside Nigeria. The Ministry also launched the Nigeria Police Veterans Foundation to support retired officers and introduced the annual Nigeria Police Award to promote professionalism within the force.

However, challenges persist. According to Hadiza Bala Usman, while the Ministry recorded strong performance in Q2, progress declined in Q3. She noted issues such as the inability of the police to assume control of communities reclaimed from insurgents, insufficient local community support, and a general lack of trust in the police.

Despite these hurdles, Senator Gaidam reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to achieving its 16 deliverables aligned with presidential priorities, ensuring continued improvement in policing and internal security across Nigeria.
