NCC Sensitises Corps Members on Data Depletion, Donates Items to NYSC Camps

KEFFI, NIGERIA August, 2025 -

‎The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday, August, 2025, carried its consumer outreach to corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camps in Keffi, Nasarawa State, and Paiko, Niger State. The exercise was aimed at sensitising the youths on telecom-related issues, particularly data depletion, and equipping them with skills to manage their data effectively.

‎Addressing the corps members through representatives, the Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau, Mrs. Freda Ruth Bruce-Bennett, said the Commission was committed to protecting the interests of telecom subscribers in a rapidly evolving digital environment. She explained that the sensitisation, themed “Consumer Sensitization on Data Depletion: The Role of National Youth Service Corps Members,” was necessitated by increasing complaints from consumers over unexplained data usage.

‎The Commission highlighted key causes of excessive data consumption, including video streaming, automatic app updates, and hotspot usage, while sharing smart data management tips such as monitoring data usage, restricting background data, and using data-saving modes. Corps members were also urged to serve as “consumer champions” by spreading awareness about telecom rights and helping others manage data more effectively.

‎In an interactive session, the NCC engaged the corps members in quiz competitions, with winners going home with gift items such as power banks, airtime, and data subscriptions. The gesture drew excitement among participants, reinforcing the Commission’s goal of combining education with consumer empowerment.

‎Beyond sensitisation, the NCC extended its goodwill to the camps by donating three 50kg bags of rice and three 25-litre gallons of vegetable oil each to the NYSC in Nasarawa and Niger States. The items were received by the respective State Coordinators, Hajiya Salamatu Mohammed and Mrs. Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, who commended the Commission for supporting the welfare of corps members while empowering them with knowledge that will serve them beyond their service year.
