NCPWD Commends NCC for Digital Citizenship Workshop for Persons with Disabilities

‎By Gloria Sarauniya Usman

ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2025 -

‎The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Ayuba Gufwan, has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for organising a sensitisation workshop on digital citizenship for persons with disabilities. Speaking in Abuja recently, Gufwan, represented by the Commission’s Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, described the initiative as timely and aligned with national and global commitments to accessibility and sustainable development.

‎With the theme “Empowering All – Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities,” the workshop brought together stakeholders to exchange knowledge and strategies for bridging the digital divide. Gufwan said information and communication technologies (ICTs), when made accessible, hold transformative potential to eliminate barriers in education, employment, health, and civic participation for persons with disabilities.

‎He urged policymakers, ICT professionals, civil society actors, and persons with disabilities to leverage the platform to develop inclusive digital solutions that leave no one behind. He also reaffirmed NCPWD’s commitment to collaborate with the NCC and other partners to ensure that Nigeria’s digital transformation remains inclusive and empowering for all citizens.

‎Key highlights of the workshop included discussions on online safety, privacy, and ethical digital behaviour, as well as a presentation by Barrister Ikem Onuegbunam on addressing stigma and closing the digital divide. Participants agreed that digital citizenship is critical to access to information, improved communication, inclusive education, remote employment opportunities, and overall empowerment for persons with disabilities.

‎The event also featured the presentation of braille books by the NCC’s Director of Digital Economy, Mrs. Olatokunboh Oleyele, to the NCPWD. The materials were received on behalf of the Commission by Mr. Idemudia, while certificates of participation were distributed to all attendees as part of the closing ceremony.
