NIGCOMSAT Brings Space-Tech Innovation and VSAT Training to South-South Youth in Calabar

By Gloria Sarauniya Usman

CALABAR, NIGERIA – July 2025

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd has announced that the next edition of its Regional Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT Training Programme will be hosted in Calabar, Cross River State, from July 21 to 26, 2025.

The event, which is open to startups, university students, tech innovators, and young professionals across the South-South region, is designed to promote innovation through satellite and space-based technologies. Interested participants are encouraged to register via the NIGCOMSAT website.

This groundbreaking initiative is part of NIGCOMSAT’s broader commitment to empowering Nigerian youth with cutting-edge digital skills and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director/CEO of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, said the five-day hackathon will serve as a platform for participants to identify real-life community challenges, brainstorm solutions, develop prototypes, and receive mentorship from leading industry experts.

“This programme is about creating opportunities for young Nigerians to not only innovate but also access the support needed to implement their ideas,” Egerton-Idehen said.

One of the highlights of the event will be the VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) Training, during which 100 young individuals will be trained in the installation, configuration, and maintenance of VSAT systems—an essential technology used to extend broadband access to remote and underserved communities.

Participants will receive industry-recognized certification, equipping them with valuable skills that can lead to employment or entrepreneurship in Nigeria’s growing ICT sector.

The winning team from the hackathon will earn a place in the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme, Cohort 2025, providing them with additional resources, exposure, and support to further develop and implement their ideas.

The Cross River edition follows successful hackathon and training programmes earlier held in Yola, Adamawa State (February 24–28) and Dutse, Jigawa State (April 7–11), which recorded strong youth participation and community impact.

The upcoming programme, co-hosted by the Cross River State Government and NIGCOMSAT Ltd, reflects a strategic push to tap into regional talent and scale tech-based solutions to national challenges, while addressing youth unemployment.

“Through initiatives like this, we are unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s next generation of innovators,” added Egerton-Idehen.
