ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2025 –
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their continued compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, following the submission of their 2024 compliance reports. The Code, jointly issued by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), provides guidelines for online safety and management of harmful content.
According to the reports, the platforms recorded 754,629 registered complaints, 58,909,112 content takedowns, 420,439 cases of content removed and reuploaded after user appeals, and 13,597,057 accounts closed or deactivated. These figures highlight the platforms’ collective efforts to safeguard users and address harmful digital activities.
NITDA described the submission of the reports as a significant step towards fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment in Nigeria. The Agency noted that compliance also reflects the Code’s requirement for large service platforms to be registered in Nigeria, comply with relevant laws, and fulfill their tax obligations, while prioritizing user safety.
While commending the platforms, NITDA emphasized that building a secure digital space requires sustained collaboration among all stakeholders, including regulators, industry players, and civil society. The Agency further stressed the importance of trust, transparency, and continuous innovation in tackling online harm.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners to strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote responsible use of technology for the benefit of all Nigerians.
