NUJ FCT Council Pays Tribute to Former Secretary Rafat Idris Following Her Sudden Demise

ABUJA, NIGERIA December, 2024 - The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden passing of its former Secretary, Mrs. Rafat Idris.


Mrs. Rafat passed away in the early hours of Friday, December 20, 2024, in Abuja after a brief illness.


In a statement signed by the Council's Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, her death was described as a devastating loss to the union and the journalism profession.


“The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council received the news of Mrs. Rafat Idris's untimely death with deep shock and disbelief. Rafat was a great asset to journalism and a quintessential journalist who served the union diligently in various capacities,” the statement read.


“She was not just a colleague but a friend and mother to many, a peace-loving individual, and a strong pillar of the union. Her unwavering dedication and commitment contributed immensely to the growth of the NUJ during her tenure as Secretary. Her passion for excellence and professionalism will remain an enduring legacy.”


The NUJ FCT Council extended heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, the NUJ Voice of Nigeria (VON) Chapel, and the entire management of VON.


Mrs. Rafat Idris was an Assistant Director of Digital Media at VON. She also served as the former Assistant Secretary and, more recently, the Treasurer of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria. In addition, she was the founder of the Okenite Foundation for Special Needs Children and a key media personnel of Habbabiya.


Hailing from Ihima in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mrs. Rafat is survived by three children.


Her burial will take place today at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic rites.


The NUJ FCT Council, alongside colleagues and friends, honors her memory as a dedicated journalist, leader, and advocate for professionalism and inclusivity in the media space.
