ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2025 –
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonaya Nlia, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms on policing aimed at strengthening professionalism and ensuring effective service delivery in Nigeria.
Dr. Anuma made this known during a meeting with a delegation of the Nigeria Police Force led by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Nemi Edwin, on the proposed new scheme of service for the Nigeria Police Force. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to him, the Ministry is fully aligned with the reform agenda of the Federal Government and will continue to work closely with the Police leadership to ensure improved efficiency, accountability, and respect for human rights in policing. He stressed that reforms targeted at welfare, morale, and capacity development of police officers are crucial for sustaining law and order across the country.
“The Ministry of Police Affairs is fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders by engaging in open dialogue, sharing perspectives, and collectively addressing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” Dr. Anuma said. “We believe that through regular consultations and a unified approach, we can strengthen the Nigeria Police Force and enhance its capacity to serve and protect all citizens.”
Discussions at the meeting centered on critical areas to reposition the Police Force for improved performance, including enhanced welfare packages, pension reform, training and capacity building, career progression, discipline, accountability, and the introduction of a modern Performance Management System (PMS).
In his remarks, AIG Nemi Edwin commended the Permanent Secretary and Directors of the Ministry for the warm reception, describing Dr. Anuma as a unique leader. He emphasized that the success of the proposed new service scheme for the Police Force is largely dependent on the active involvement and guidance of the Ministry of Police Affairs.
At the close of deliberations, the Permanent Secretary, alongside the Police delegation, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, for further engagement on the subject.
