Powering the Digital Economy: NITDA, NISO Move to Build Smarter Energy Infrastructure

ABUJA, NIGERIA June, 2026 -

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) are exploring a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating digital transformation in Nigeria’s power sector, in a move that underscores the growing convergence between energy infrastructure and the digital economy.

At a high-level meeting in Abuja, NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, described reliable electricity as the foundation upon which digital innovation, artificial intelligence, data centres, and other technology-driven services thrive. He noted that as Nigeria expands its digital economy ambitions, strengthening the power sector has become critical to sustaining growth, attracting investment, and enhancing national competitiveness.

Inuwa commended NISO’s technology-first approach, noting that the organisation’s commitment to embedding digital tools into its operations positions it to play a pivotal role in modernising Nigeria’s electricity ecosystem. He disclosed that NITDA is prepared to leverage its experience in supporting digital transformation across public institutions, including anti-corruption and regulatory agencies, and proposed the establishment of a joint technical team to identify priority projects and develop a framework for collaboration.

Speaking during the engagement, NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Bello Mohammed, said the organisation is already deploying Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled metering solutions across key points in the electricity value chain to improve visibility and operational efficiency. According to him, the initiative will provide real-time data from generation, transmission, and distribution interfaces while supporting efforts to enhance grid stability and decision-making pending the completion of the SCADA/EMS project.

Both organisations expressed optimism that deeper collaboration would accelerate innovation, improve transparency, and strengthen the infrastructure needed to support Nigeria’s digital future. The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for technology adoption within the power sector while reinforcing the link between reliable energy supply and sustainable digital economic growth.
