ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2025 –
Stakeholders in Nigeria’s science, technology, and innovation (STI) sector have concluded plans to host the maiden National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation Communication (STICOMMSLOC) in collaboration with the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja. The event, scheduled for October 21–23, 2025, will take place at the AUST campus with the theme “Communicating Science, Technology, and Innovation for National Development.”
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Bosco Okolo-Obi, said the conference is designed to bring together researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, educators, the media, and the public on one platform to strengthen STI communication. He noted that without effective translation of research into policies, products, and public understanding, Nigeria’s aspiration for a robust knowledge economy would remain unattainable.
According to Okolo-Obi, the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes economic diversification, innovation-driven growth, and human capital development. He explained that the gathering will focus on breaking barriers of technical language, building partnerships, training science communicators, and advocating policies to institutionalize STI communication in the country.
President of AUST, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, said the university was proud to host the conference, highlighting that its innovation hub has already secured ten patents in the past year. Also, Director of Information, New Media and Protocol at NASENI, Mr. Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, stressed the need to entrench a culture of STI in Nigeria, while urging citizens, stakeholders, and the media to play an active role in promoting the initiative, which will be held annually.
