Two Years On, Galaxy Backbone Recasts Nigeria’s Digital Nerve Centre

ABUJA, NIGERIA February, 2026 - Two years after a new executive management team was appointed to lead Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), the federal government’s digital infrastructure company says it has moved from stabilisation to strategic expansion—strengthening sovereign infrastructure and repositioning itself as a central pillar of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
Appointed in February 2024, the management team led by Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, alongside Executive Directors Hon. Olusegun Olulade, Muhammed Sani Ibrahim and Olumbe Akinkugbe, began with the rollout of the Integrated Digital Transformation Strategy (IDTS) 2023–2028. The framework shifted the organisation’s focus beyond connectivity provision to building an integrated ecosystem anchored on secure infrastructure, shared platforms and service-wide digital enablement for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Within two years, broadband services were extended to nine underserved local government areas under Project 774, while Fibre-to-Hostel projects were completed at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja and University of Jos. Connectivity upgrades were also delivered to critical national assets, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and major federal secretariats, aimed at improving operational efficiency and reliability.
GBB also strengthened Nigeria’s digital resilience architecture through a strategic partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), reinforcing the national fibre backbone and expanding redundancy capacity. At the same time, the 1Government Cloud platform was expanded to accommodate more MDAs, GovMail was deployed to over 100,000 public servants, and cybersecurity monitoring was enhanced with round-the-clock service desk operations and upgraded data centre infrastructure.
Despite fiscal pressures, legacy systems and rising cyber threats, the company reports measurable gains in service delivery and governance standards, earning multiple industry recognitions over the period. As it marks the second anniversary of the leadership transition, Galaxy Backbone says its priority remains clear: deepening connectivity, consolidating cloud sovereignty and safeguarding Nigeria’s digital backbone as a foundation for long-term national development.
