"APRA Urges Climate Crisis Action Amid Nigeria, Cameroon Floods"
By Gloria Sarauniya Usman
LAGOS, NIGERIA September 2024 -The African Public Relations Association (APRA) extends its deepest condolences to the governments and people of Nigeria and Cameroon following the devastating floods that have ravaged both countries.
Recent flooding in Nigeria's Borno State and Northeast region, as well as Cameroon's Far North Province, has caused significant loss of life and destruction. The floods, triggered by the collapse of a dam in Maiduguri and excessive rainfall in Mayo Danay, have displaced thousands, disrupted local ecology and livelihoods, and damaged infrastructure.
In Nigeria, over 600 people have lost their lives, and 1.3 million have been displaced, with severe impacts on agricultural production and food prices. In Cameroon, the floods have affected over 100 schools and caused extensive damage to livestock, infrastructure, and communities.
APRA is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crises triggered by these floods and notes their occurrence amidst other climate-related disasters in Africa, such as the Arba’at Dam collapse in Sudan.
To address these challenges, APRA has established specialized committees to improve communication strategies around climate change and its impact on African communities. The association aims to leverage its observer status with the African Union to engage with ministers and relevant bodies to support sustainable growth across sectors.
APRA commends the prompt response of national and local governments, international organizations, and stakeholders. The association stands in solidarity with the governments and people of Nigeria and Cameroon in their efforts to address the ongoing humanitarian crises.
"We extend heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones and wish a swift recovery to those displaced, injured, or impacted by the floods," said Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, fnipr, Secretary-General of APRA.
