"Civil Society Groups Condemn Tragic Attacks at Obikabia, Call for Investigation and Accountability

ABUJA, NIGERIA June 22, 2024 -

The Community of Practice Against Mass Atrocities and allied organizations, under the auspices of Nigeria Mourns, have condemned the brutal killing of 11 people, including six civilians and five soldiers, in an attack at a military checkpoint at Obikabia Junction in Abia State on May 30, 2024.


The groups called for an immediate investigation into the incident and accountability for the perpetrators. They also urged the military and community members to exercise restraint and allow the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, rather than resorting to acts of vengeance or reprisals.


The statement emphasized the need for transparency in the investigation process and the importance of rebuilding trust between civilians and security forces. The groups also called for adequate support and compensation for the families of victims and initiatives to promote dialogue and cooperation between civilians and security forces.


The statement was signed by seven civil society organizations,for the Community of Practise Against Mass Atrocities including: We the People,Global Rights,Center for Community Excellence,African Initiative for Peace Building, Advocacy and Advancement (AfriPeace),Sesor Empowerment Foundation, Alliances for Africa

and Initiative for Peace, Justice and Development.
