ABIDJAN, CÔTE D'IVOIRE May 17, 2024- Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has been elected Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association (APRA) at the 35th Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Ibietan, a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and APRA, will work with President Arik Karani (Kenya) and Vice President Dr. Michele Mekeme (Cameroon) to continue APRA's reforms and expand democratic space for national public relations institutions across Africa. He has also pledged to work closely with the African Union Commission and Council of Ministers to prioritize public relations in policy implementation.


With over 20 years of experience in media and communication scholarship and practice, Ibietan has worked with top organizations, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Ministry of Information and Communication.


He has taught at the Nigerian campus of Italy-based Rome Business School (RBS) and has published a book on social media, social demography, and voting behavior in Nigeria.


Ibietan's election is seen as a testament to Nigeria's leadership in public relations and communications. His expertise in political communication, media and culture studies, and communication strategy will be invaluable to APRA's mission to foster unity and excellence in public relations across Africa.


The conference, themed 'One Africa, One Voice: Bridging Africa's Communication Divide', featured the Innovation Summit (IN2SUMMIT) and the SABRE Awards Africa. APRA, established in 1975, maintains an observer status with the African Union and is endorsed by major global PR associations.
