ABUJA, AUGUST, 2024 - African Tomorrow Plus (ATP), an NGO, has pledged to empower 100,000 women farmers in Nigeria with sweet potato farming kits, aiming to improve their economic livelihoods and provide healthy nutrition.
The three-year program, running from 2024 to 2027, will be coordinated in partnership with the Nigerian Women Economic Development Project (NigWED Project), a collaborative initiative between SEEED Multipurpose Cooperative Society and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
According to ATP President, Mr. Kenneth Eze, the program will cover farming, processing, preservation, packaging, and promotion of Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP), which will reduce mothers and children mortality rates and provide economic benefits.
Mr. Lugard Okonobo, Director-General of NigWED, commended the initiative and promised to ensure its objectives are met. He highlighted the economic challenges in Nigeria and the need for strategic alliances to improve the situation.
The program has already empowered 30 women with OFSP vines for the first planting phase in the Federal Capital Territory, with plans for expansion to other states in Nigeria.
This initiative aims to provide health and wealth benefits for women and girls, and ATP urges other stakeholders in the agribusiness to support this initiative considering its short, medium, and long-term benefits.
