Ex-LP Governorship Candidate Urges Mbah to Compensate Demolition Victims

By Perpetua Onuegbu

ABUJA, AUGUST 2024 - Mr. Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party's 2023 governorship candidate in Enugu State, has called on Governor Peter Mbah to compensate victims of the June demolitions executed by his government.

At a news conference in Abuja, Edeoga emphasized the need for justice for affected traders and business owners, including those from Ogige-Nsukka Market, Ifeainach Transport Ltd, and other demolished markets and livelihoods.

He highlighted the widespread destruction of markets, buildings, and businesses in Enugu metropolis and Nsukka Local Government Area, which sparked condemnation and protests.

Edeoga disputed the government's claims of compensation and alternative provisions, citing ongoing struggles of displaced traders and the planned replacement of Ogige-Nsukka market with a filling station.

He urged Governor Mbah to provide relief markets for immediate use by displaced traders and ensure fair compensation for affected individuals and businesses.

The Enugu State government had justified the demolitions as necessary for infrastructure expansion, including a modern bus terminal, and claimed that legal tenants were compensated beforehand.
