"FG Launches AI Tool to Boost Youth Participation in Elections"

By Perpetua Onuegbu

ABUJA, NIGERIA June 22, 2024 - The Federal Government has launched an artificial intelligence tool designed to enhance the electoral development of youths in Nigeria. The Minister of Youths Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim, unveiled the platform, called Naija Elections, which was developed by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) with the support of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

According to Dr. Ibrahim, the AI tool marks a new era in which all Nigerians can participate meaningfully in the electoral process. "In an era where technology and information are crucial to ensuring our young people have the tools and knowledge to engage in the democratic process actively, this platform will empower our youths by providing easy access to accurate and real-time electoral information," she said.

The platform aims to combat misinformation and disinformation, enhance voter education and electoral knowledge, and provide reliable information on the electoral process. It is available in three major Nigerian languages - Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba - and is expected to expand to 150 languages by the next election in 2027.

The launch was also attended by Mr. Bukola Idowu, Executive Director of KDI, and Cynthia Rowe, Development Director of FCDO, who emphasized the importance of a well-informed electorate in a diverse country like Nigeria. The app can be accessed at www.naijaelections.ng.

This launch demonstrates the government's commitment to deploying technology to enhance democratic processes and ensure a more informed and engaged citizenry.
