The Federal Government of Nigeria is stepping up efforts to enhance food security by integrating emerging technologies into the agricultural sector. A recent collaboration between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Agriculture Development Fund (NADF) is expected to drive significant advancements in agricultural productivity.
At the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, emphasized the government's focus on leveraging technology to strengthen agriculture. "President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to ensuring food security, and in today's world, this cannot be achieved without digital technology. This MoU marks a key step toward boosting agricultural productivity through emerging technologies," Inuwa stated.
He highlighted ongoing initiatives, such as the National Adopted Village for Smart Agriculture (NAVSA), which have already seen success through partnerships with universities and startups developing innovative agricultural solutions. "This year, we provided grants to startups with ideas on using technology to enhance agriculture. These projects are currently being tested on farms across the country," he added.
NADF’s Executive Secretary, Mohammed Abu Ibrahim, echoed the importance of merging agriculture and technology, particularly as the sector faces challenges like climate change, funding constraints, and insecurity. "Emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and WAV are showing promising results in optimizing our agricultural processes. By using data-driven approaches, we aim to achieve more with limited resources," Ibrahim said. He expressed optimism that this MoU would be the first of many such collaborations.
The partnership between NITDA and NADF signals a new chapter in Nigeria's agricultural development, with technology playing a central role in transforming the sector and boosting productivity.
