ABUJA, NIGERIA May 26, 2024 -
Global Rights has condemned the Nigerian Army's extrajudicial siege on Banex Plaza, Wuse II, Abuja, following a mob assault on its personnel on May 18, 2024. The organization demands the immediate recall and sanctioning of officers involved in the intimidation of the public.
While acknowledging the sacrifices of men and women in uniform, Global Rights strongly condemns the attack on two army officers by traders at Banex Plaza. However, the organization emphasizes that the Army must obey the rule of law and not resort to reprisal actions.
Since May 18, army trucks have been parked outside Banex Plaza, preventing business owners and customers from accessing the premises. This action violates the rights of law-abiding Nigerians who rely on their businesses for a living.
The Nigerian Army's actions have also resulted in the assault of a passerby who fell into a coma and the arrest and torture of a shop owner, Caleb Onyemaeachi Chidera.
Global Rights demands that the Nigerian Army:
- Withdraw its trucks and personnel from Banex Plaza and allow business to resume unhindered.
- Release those arrested in relation to the events of May 18th at Banex Plaza or hand them over to the Police for interrogation and possible prosecution.
- Issue a public apology to those whose rights have been unfairly infringed upon and cover the cost of treatment for the assaulted woman.
The organization reiterates its sympathy for the attacked army personnel but urges the Army not to punish law-abiding Nigerians for the actions of a few.
