"NASENI Discovers Innovator Jamilu Tanko, Pioneering Cyclone Furnace Set to Revolutionize Local Industries"
By Gloria Sarauniya Usman
ABUJA, NIGERIA September, 2024 -In an era where technological innovation is driving industrial transformation, Nigerian physicist Jamilu Tanko is making waves with a groundbreaking invention designed to boost productivity across small and medium-scale industries.
Tanko's invention, the Cyclone Furnace, provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for drying various products, making it a game-changer for industries such as baking, pharmaceuticals, rice mills, papermills, brickmaking, and local communities. Powered by waste materials like rice husks, the furnace offers a sustainable and economical alternative for industries reliant on drying processes.
As a Principal Scientist at the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute (HEDI) in Kano, part of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Tanko developed the Cyclone Furnace in 2023. The furnace promises to increase efficiency, enabling it to dry the same amount of rice in 10-12 hours, a significant improvement over the 48 hours typically required by imported models.
NASENI, which identified Tanko’s potential, is eager to harness his innovation, recognizing its ability to enhance the competitiveness of local industries and reduce dependence on imported machinery. The agency aims to support Tanko’s work, ensuring the Cyclone Furnace reaches its full potential and benefits industries nationwide.
Tanko, a native of Kura Local Government Area in Kano State, holds both bachelor's and master's degrees in Physics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Physics from the same institution. His passion for developing more efficient heating systems, such as furnaces and boilers, led him to create the Cyclone Furnace.
NASENI, established by Decree No. 33 of 1992, plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s technology development, particularly in empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The agency's support for Tanko's innovation aligns with its mission to promote local industrial growth through advanced engineering technologies and production of equipment that meets international standards.
This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s push for self-reliance in industrial equipment production, with Tanko’s invention poised to make a lasting impact on the nation’s industrial landscape.
