The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has highlighted the critical role of corporate governance in driving the continued growth and transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. Speaking at the 2024 Annual Corporate Governance Conference in Lagos, Maida emphasized that robust governance practices have been a major factor behind the sector’s rapid expansion, fostering transparency, efficiency, and innovation.
In his presentation titled "Corporate Survival and Sustainability—The New Face of Governance in the Nigerian Telecoms Sector," Maida explained that adopting solid governance frameworks has built investor confidence, attracted significant investments, and strengthened infrastructure, which in turn has enhanced customer experience. According to Maida, the progress in the telecom sector is a direct outcome of its commitment to ethical standards, accountability, and strategic planning.
The conference, which gathered key industry stakeholders, provided a platform for discussions on the evolving role of corporate governance in sustaining growth. Maida urged the sector to continuously improve governance standards, underscoring that they are essential for innovation, long-term sustainability, and global competitiveness.
Reflecting on the telecom sector's significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth, Maida pointed out that its expansion is creating jobs, boosting the economy, and improving national connectivity. He attributed this success to the NCC’s steadfast commitment to enforcing high standards of transparency, accountability, and ethical practices. He noted that these practices have been crucial in securing sustained investments and infrastructure development, contributing to Nigeria’s economic resilience and digital future.
Maida stressed that effective governance is no longer just about regulatory compliance but is now critical for the survival and sustainability of the telecom industry. "Good corporate governance must be a culture ingrained at every level of an organization. It’s the foundation of the telecom industry's success in a fast-evolving digital landscape," he said.
The conference also explored strategies to enhance transparency, accountability, and strategic oversight, which Maida described as essential for ensuring the sector's continued expansion and resilience.
In his closing remarks, he reiterated that adherence to strong governance principles would be key to guiding the telecom industry through future challenges and opportunities, ensuring its ongoing role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic development.
