LAGOS, NIGERIA September, 2024 - The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is positioning Nigeria to join the growing list of nations leveraging the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 applications, according to Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NCC. Dr. Maida made the announcement at the Annual Stakeholders' Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies held in Lagos on September 19, 2024.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Maida emphasized that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NCC had taken steps to align its strategies with the emerging opportunities in telecommunications. Since the beginning of the administration in 2023, the Commission has focused on key drivers such as collaboration, digitalization, and compliance to enhance service delivery in the industry.

"As part of our strategic focus areas, collaboration plays a critical role in ensuring our regulatory actions align with stakeholder expectations," said Dr. Maida. "Today, we seek your feedback on the use of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). This band, spanning from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, offers a significant increase in spectrum availability crucial for addressing the growing demand for high-speed internet."

The NCC’s initiative follows global best practices, with the Commission aiming to make informed decisions based on input from industry operators, consumers, and government representatives. Dr. Maida highlighted the increasing need for expanded spectrum as the currently used 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands are becoming saturated due to rising data demands.

The forum also reflected on the outcomes of the 2023 World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-23) in Dubai, which allocated the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi and IMT applications.

Dr. Maida concluded by inviting stakeholders to provide insights on the Commission
