"Nigeria Takes Helm of African Regional Institute, Pledges to Advance Geospatial Science and Technology"

ABUJA, NIGERIA August, 2024 -
The Federal Republic of Nigeria has been elected as the Chairman of the Governing Council of the African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST) at the 55th Council meeting held at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.
Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, will lead the council for the next two years, representing the Nigerian government. The meeting also approved the admission of the Republic of Liberia as a new council member and appointed a statutory committee comprising members from various states.
This election underscores Nigeria's leadership role in advancing geospatial information science and technology in Africa and its commitment to regional collaboration and development.
In his acceptance speech, Surv. Adebomehin assured the council of a successful tenure, expressing gratitude to the outgoing chairman from Ghana for his dedication. He pledged to uphold the institute's principles and emphasized the importance of cooperation among member countries and the Nigerian government to enhance the institute's infrastructure, providing a conducive environment for learning and research.
AFRIGIST is a bilingual inter-governmental institution with nine member countries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria (host country), and Senegal. Membership is open to all African countries.
