NITDA Applauds Tech Giants for Compliance with Online Safety Code, Reports N2.55 Trillion Revenue Contribution

ABUJA, NIGERIA December, 2024 - The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has praised global tech giants, including Google, X, Microsoft, and TikTok, for adhering to the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.
The Code, developed collaboratively by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), outlines clear guidelines for promoting online safety and addressing harmful content.
Insights from the 2023 Compliance Report highlight the platforms’ commitment to user safety, reflecting alignment with the Code of Practice and their community standards. The report revealed the following key statistics:
4,125,283 registered complaints were logged.
65,853,581 pieces of harmful content were removed.
379,433 pieces of content were taken down and later re-uploaded after user appeals.
12,099,633 accounts were closed or deactivated for violations.
NITDA commended the significant strides made by these platforms in fostering a safer and more responsible digital ecosystem for Nigerians and the global community in Nigeria.
Additionally, data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) highlighted a substantial financial contribution by foreign digital companies operating in Nigeria. These platforms generated over N2.55 trillion (approximately $1.5 billion) in taxes during the first half of 2024, underscoring the effectiveness of Nigeria’s regulatory framework in promoting compliance and boosting the digital economy.
While celebrating the progress, NITDA emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and innovative strategies to tackle emerging challenges in the digital space. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with stakeholders to strengthen user safety, enhance digital literacy, and foster trust and transparency.
