ABUJA, NIGERIA November, 2024 - In alignment with the Federal Government's agenda to reform the economy, accelerate diversification, and improve governance, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, has called for stronger collaboration among key players in the Fintech sector to enhance financial literacy and inclusion.

Speaking at the 6th edition of the FirstBank FinTech Summit held at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Inuwa emphasized the importance of co-creation and participatory policymaking in fostering innovation and protecting consumer interests. Participating in a panel discussion titled “Policy and Infrastructure: Navigating Financial Regulations for Fintech Innovations”, the DG outlined NITDA’s efforts to create value-driven regulations under its Regulatory Intelligence Framework.

“Our approach is not about imposing standards; it’s about creating and supporting markets through collaboration,” Inuwa remarked. He cited the agency’s partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the implementation of the cashless policy, which catalyzed the growth of Nigeria’s Fintech industry by addressing gaps in traditional banking infrastructure.

Inuwa also highlighted ongoing collaborations with the Federal Inland Revenue Service and other stakeholders to develop guidelines for electronic invoicing, creating further opportunities for Fintech innovation. He stressed that inclusive policymaking, involving key implementers, is essential for effective execution and fostering trust in digital platforms.

To bridge the digital divide, NITDA has introduced a National Digital Literacy Framework, integrating digital skills into formal education and training programs. According to the DG, over 17,000 National Youth Service Corps members are trained annually, with initiatives aimed at reaching artisans, market women, senior citizens, and other underserved groups.

“NITDA’s efforts in fostering digital literacy and cultivating local talent are designed to build a digitally inclusive society,” he stated, adding that the agency is also addressing data sovereignty challenges by promoting in-country cloud capabilities and developing a robust cybersecurity architecture.

Inuwa urged Fintech operators to leverage these frameworks and initiatives to infuse financial literacy into underserved communities, thereby driving deeper financial inclusion. “With the right collaborations and policies, Nigeria can bridge the digital and financial divides, ensuring inclusive growth for all,” he concluded.

The panel also featured insights from prominent stakeholders, including Mr. Premier Oiwoh, MD & CEO of NIBSS; Mr. Bashir Are, CEO of Lagos Lotteries & Gaming Authority; and Mr. Adewale Salami, Chief Information Officer of FirstBank of Nigeria.
