ABUJA, NIGERIA, 2024 -

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has emphasized the potential of advanced technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain to transform Nigeria's agricultural sector. Speaking at the launch of the Survey on Digitisation of Supply-Chain in Small-Scale Nigerian Farms Project, NITDA's Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, highlighted the challenges faced by small-scale farmers and the need for digitization to improve food security and increase income.

The project, a collaboration between AGROVESTO, NITDA, Office for Nigeria Digital Innovation (ONDI), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), aims to digitize supply chains for small-scale farms, enhance food quality and safety, and promote sustainable practices.

Inuwa noted that small-scale farmers are the backbone of crop production in Nigeria, but face numerous challenges, including limited access to technology, high production costs, and poor market access. He emphasized that supply chain optimization through technology adoption can address these challenges and increase farmer income.

NITDA has been supporting the agricultural sector through initiatives like the National Adopted Village for Smart Agriculture (NAVSA) and the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), which focuses on promoting technology in agriculture to boost food security and drive economic diversification.

The project aims to improve farmer income, digitize agricultural value chains, enhance digital literacy, and empower farmers with digital skills. The expected outcomes include increased bargaining power and sales, reduced post-harvest losses, and improved market access.
