President Tinubu Orders Review of Tertiary Institution Governing Boards

ABUJA, NIGERIA May 23, 2024 -

President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of the recently announced governing boards of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, following public outcry over the lack of federal character in the nominations.

The Federal Ministry of Education had released names of nominees for chairmen, Pro-Chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with an inauguration and retreat scheduled for May 31. However, public reactions revealed that the nominations did not reflect the federal character of the country, with some states having only one nomination while others had multiple.

President Tinubu has acknowledged the feedback from across the country and directed a complete review of the list of governing council members to ensure strict compliance with the principle of federal character as enshrined in the constitution. The review will also consider national spread and ensure every part of the country is adequately represented.

The President's directive demonstrates his commitment to upholding the principles of federal character and ensuring inclusivity in the governance of tertiary institutions.

The Press Release was signed by

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced the President's directive on May 23, 2024.
