ABUJA, NIGERIA July 24, 2024 - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the ultramodern National Cybercrime Centre to enhance the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.

The centre, located in Abuja, will serve as a hub for combating cybercrimes and protecting the nation's cyberspace.

In his address, read by the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, President Tinubu emphasized the government's commitment to investing in the Nigeria Police Force through the procurement of arms, weapons, and equipment, as well as recruitment and training to boost the number, quality, and preparedness of police personnel.

The President noted that the rise of cybercrimes, online financial fraud, and cyber terrorism necessitates a robust response from law enforcement agencies. He highlighted the impact of emerging technologies, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the advent of 5G technology on the scope and diversity of cyberspace threats.

The Federal Government has implemented several policy decisions, including the review of the cybercrime plan, to mitigate the threats posed by cybercriminals. President Tinubu assured that his administration is committed to enhancing social security, tackling economic and security challenges, and providing a platform to improve the nation's credibility as a safe destination for foreign investment in the digital world.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, described the centre as a revolutionary facility that will serve as a nerve centre for policing in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa in the fight against cyber threats.

The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, commended the Nigeria Police Force for their efforts in curtailing cybercrimes and revealed an ongoing project, the National Criminal Data Fusion Center, aimed at digitalizing crime data records and sharing crime information among security agencies.
