ABUJA, NIGERIA -
The Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, has appealed to state governors to elevate their respective State Surveyor General Offices to extra-ministerial status, emphasizing that infrastructural development cannot progress without the input of surveying professionals.
Speaking at the 58th annual general meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) in Edo state, Adebomehin highlighted the crucial role of surveying in accurately determining positions, distances, and angles, stressing that "virtually nothing can be achieved without surveying."
The President of the NIS, Surv. Dr. Matthew Ibitoye, emphasized that comprehensive mapping is essential for identifying a nation's resources and addressing environmental and related problems. He urged the government to prioritize mapping, declaring a "State of Emergency on Mapping in Nigeria" to reposition the country as a prime global investment destination.
Ibitoye stressed that accurate geospatial information is vital for national development and governance, and that surveyors are the custodians of this information. He called for the mobilization of resources and prioritization efforts to update and expand mapping coverage, ensuring accurate spatial data for planning, decision-making, and development purposes across all sectors.
The NIS emphasized that well-mapped countries are the most developed, and that surveying is essential for achieving meaningful development in all sectors of the economy.
