NEW YORK, July 20, 2024 - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC) have released a report warning that the world must adopt a forward-looking approach to address the accelerating triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
The report, "Navigating New Horizons: A Global Foresight Report on Planetary Health and Human Wellbeing," identifies eight critical global shifts and 18 signals of change that are creating a polycrisis with far-reaching implications for human and planetary wellbeing.
UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasized the need for a proactive approach, stating, "As multiple crises intensify, it's essential to get ahead of the curve and prepare for emerging challenges. By monitoring signals of change and using foresight, we can avoid repeating past mistakes and focus on solutions that can withstand future disruptions."
The report highlights the importance of adopting a new social contract, engaging diverse stakeholders, and rethinking measures of progress beyond GDP. It also recommends introducing shorter-term targets and indicators for agile governance and reconfiguring financial systems to address inequalities and environmental crises.
ISC President Peter Gluckman emphasized the value of foresight in identifying future opportunities and risks, stating, "Foresight provides a useful set of tools to step outside of short-termism and help identify future challenges and solutions."
The report urges the adoption of a forward-looking approach to protect human and planetary health, emphasizing that solutions are within sight and actions are underway to address the identified global shifts and signals of change.
