*"Women Farmers Urge Government to Prioritize Safety and Security in Agriculture"*

ABUJA, NIGERIA June 22, 2024 - The Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) has called on the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the safety and security of farmers, particularly women, in the agricultural sector.

Speaking at a safety awareness training organized in collaboration with the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHAssociation), UK, NWAPDI President Mrs. Omolara Svensson emphasized the need for training on safety procedures and hazard management in farming. She noted that while empowerment and farming aids are important, the safety and security of farmers are often neglected.

The training, which focused on agro safety procedures for Nigerian women in agriculture, aimed to educate participants on identifying hazards and risks in vegetable farming and mitigating them. The event was attended by 150 women farmers, who will disseminate the knowledge gained to their colleagues across the country.

The collaboration with OSHAssociation and the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) aims to improve the fortunes of female farmers and promote safe agricultural practices. AFAN President Mr. Kabiru Ibrahim commended NWAPDI for the initiative, stressing the importance of safety in agriculture to meet international standards and export produce.

In a separate statement, NWAPDI dissociated itself from AFAN over the poor inclusion of women in AFAN activities.
