ABUJA, NIGERIA June 22, 2024 - Hamzat Lawal, CEO of Connected Development (CODE), has called on President Tinubu to set a timeline for security agency chiefs to deliver on their mandate or face exit. Lawal made this statement at the unveiling of CODE's 2023 Annual Report and Democracy Day event in Abuja.
He emphasized the need for accountability and key performance indicators for security chiefs, given the significant allocation of budget resources to security.
Lawal commended their efforts but stressed the need for tangible results.
On the occasion of Democracy Day, Lawal reflected on Nigeria's 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, acknowledging progress made and the need to build trust, a crucial ingredient missing in Nigeria's democracy.
The event also saw the unveiling of CODE's 2023 Annual Report, "Echoes of Impact 2023," highlighting the organization's achievements in promoting transparency and good governance. Lawal noted that CODE's advocacy efforts had led to the release of $5.3 million in funds for artisanal mining victims in Zamfara state and impacted over 40 million people in 12 years.
Emmanuel Njoku, Director of Democracy and Governance at CODE, encouraged young Nigerians to participate in politics and democracy, emphasizing that their involvement would lead to a better nation."
